CO2 emissions down last year

China's carbon dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan ($1,445 ) of GDP fell 5 percent year-on-year in 2025, as the country made notable progress in energy conservation and carbon reduction, official data showed. Energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP, excluding energy used as raw materials and nonfossil energy consumption, declined 5.1 percent year-on-year in 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Preventing extreme weather impact

Chinese railway operators have strengthened measures to prevent and mitigate the effect of cold waves on railway lines. Since this year's 40-day Spring Festival travel rush began on Feb 2, the Taiyuan South Engineering Section in Shanxi province has formed an ice-removal team and launched deicing operations. Once, temperatures inside the Lyuliang Mountains tunnel on the Taiyuan-Zhongwei railway dropped to — 18 C, causing water seepage inside it to freeze into "ice spikes", posing a threat to train safety. The 10-odd team members each carried 30 kilograms of ice-melting agents and hiked 3 kilometers deep into the tunnel to successfully clear the threat.
