The nation's renewed push for constitutional revision, military expansion and strategic alliances under the guise of safeguarding a "free and open Indo-Pacific" is not only a departure from its post-World War II commitment to peace but also a dangerous revival of the country's militaristic tendencies.

Takaichi's advocacy for amending Japan's Constitution is a concerning development that signals a significant shift in the nation's defense posture. The country's pacifist Constitution stipulates that Japan should commit to peace and nonaggression. Takaichi's push for constitutional change is not merely a legal reform but a strategic maneuver to break free from the restrictions on Japan's military development. This move is deeply disturbing, as it indicates a willingness to abandon the principles of peace that have guided Japan since the end of World War II.

This concern is compounded by her government hyping up a "free and open Indo-Pacific" as a means for bloc confrontation.

During her recent visits to Australia and Vietnam, Takaichi promoted an updated version of the "free and open Indo-Pacific" vision, which serves as a pretext for building "small circles" that undermine the strategic security and interests of other nations. By framing this vision as a response to perceived "threats", Japan is effectively creating an environment of tension and confrontation, rather than fostering cooperation and dialogue.

Tokyo's "free and open Indo-Pacific" narrative is particularly problematic, as it is being used to justify military collusion and the formation of alliances that exclude and target specific nations, as Jiang Bin, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, said at a news briefing on Saturday. He pointed out that Tokyo is undermining the strategic security and interests of other countries, by creating excuses for Japan to break free from the restrictions on its military development.

"The call of our times is for peace and cooperation rather than war and confrontation," he said, urging Japan and the countries it has been stepping up military collusion with "to do more things that are truly conducive to regional peace and stability", which is in line with the common aspiration of their peoples.

The joint statement issued by Japanese and Philippine defense officials, "opposing any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion in the East China Sea and the South China Sea", is a baseless accusation that serves to highlight Tokyo's attempts to create camp confrontation. The statement, while claiming to uphold regional security, is little more than a thinly veiled attempt to shift the blame onto China for the region's tensions.

The international community must view these developments with concern, as they signal a dangerous shift in Japan's military posture.

This is reinforced by Takaichi's actions, such as kneeling at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier during her visit to Australia, which was a calculated bid to curry favor with Western allies. However, Japan's Asian neighbors, which suffered immensely under Japanese imperialism, have yet to receive a formal apology for Japan's historical aggression.

The lack of genuine atonement is a significant barrier to reconciliation and further isolates Japan within the region.

The consequences of Japan continuing on its militaristic path will be far-reaching.
