China strongly condemns Paraguayan president's provocative visit to Taiwan
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun expressed China's firm opposition and strong condemnation on Tuesday, in response to Paraguayan President Santiago Pena's recent provocative visit to the Taiwan region.
Addressing a daily news briefing in Beijing, Guo noted that domestic polls in Paraguay showed that nearly 90 percent of the Paraguayan public support the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Paraguay.
"This fully shows that establishing diplomatic relations with China is in the fundamental and long-term interests of the Paraguayan people," he said.
"We urge the Paraguayan government to correct its course at an early date, recognize the prevailing trend, heed public opinion, and make the correct political decision to recognize the one-China principle," he added.
