China will continue to play a role within its ability in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in Beijing on Thursday.

Qin made the remarks at a regular press conference, answering a question on whether China will increase investment in the IMF.

"Under current situation, the international community should join hands to cope with the financial crisis, and China is willing to enhance cooperation with world financial organizations including the IMF," he said.

The spokesman noted that China's contribution to the IMF in 2006 had increased from 2.98 percent to 3.72 percent of the total IMF contributions from member nations.

Qin added that the G20 summit on the financial crisis will be an important occasion for the international community to discuss the current financial situation and future development of the world economy.

"China hoped to send a positive and strong signal to the international community that all countries should unite and show a confident, decisive and responsible attitude, and take measures to restore people's confidence in the market, to stabilize the financial market and to ensure stable growth of the world economy," he said.

Chinese President Hu Jintao will attend the summit in Washington, along with state leaders of G20 members as well as officials from the United Nations, the World Bank and the IMF.
