A newborn panda cub with a harelip and cleft palate at the China
Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Wolong, Southwest China's
Sichuan Province, August 24, 2006. The cub is the first of its kind in the
world, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The 135-gram cub, one of two born to
11-year-old Yaya in the early morning on August 23, also has an abnormal left
eye and ear. The cub, which also has respiratory problems, is under 24-hour
observation and will receive surgery if it survives, according to Xinhua
