TIANJIN -- Li Baojin, former chief procurator in Tianjin, a municipality in north China, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China on suspicion of bribery and embezzlement, local government sources announced on Thursday.

Li is accused of taking advantage of his powerful position to obtain several million yuan from large enterprises, misappropriating a huge amount of public funds and registering off-the-book accounts under a subsidiary. He now faces prosecution.

Li also once served as deputy head of the municipal Public Security Bureau and of the Politics and Law Committee of the Party's municipal committee.

In China, the chief procurator heads up the prosecution team in high-profile cases at municipal level, approves arrests and supervises police activities.
