Cai Wei only has a high school diploma and worked in a factory until he was laid off in 1994, but he has studied ancient Chinese in his spare time for over 20 years. His dedication and knowledge impressed Professor Qiu Xigun, an expert in ancient Chinese documents, who offered him a spot in the PhD program and waived the requirement he take usual entrance exam.
