China is not planning to postpone the retirement age for senior citizens, an official at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security told People’s Daily on Wednesday.

Wang Xiaochu, vice-minister of the ministry, said China is only researching on the retirement age.

Some experts previously warned that the increasing population of aged people will put more pressure on China’s pension system, with two taxpayers supporting one pensioner by 2035. The experts suggested postponing the retirement age to enhance the average contribution of senior citizens to society.

The retirement age in China is generally set at 60 for men and 50-55 for women.
