Warning images on cigarette packs backed: survey

By Wang Qingyun (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2013-01-03 16:34

About 85 percent of the people polled said that they support placing warning images on cigarette packs, according to a survey conducted by Beijing's disease and prevention control authorities, the Beijing News reported on Thursday.

Last year, health authorities carried out a citywide campaign advocating warning images on cigarette packs to warn people about the dangerous effects of smoking.

Interviews done along the campaign exhibitions showed that 5,700 people supported the idea of putting warning images — such as rotten teeth and damaged lungs — on cigarette packs, accounting for 85 percent of those surveyed.

Even though the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control requires signing parties to apply "large, clear, visible and legible" warnings on cigarette packs, such as pictures, China — which is one of the signing parties — hasn't yet put warning pictures on cigarette packs.
