Shanghai sees rise in life expectancy

By WANG HONGYI in Shanghai (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-01-27 17:15

Shanghai residents have seen a steady increase in life expectancy, which reached 82.47 years in 2013, according to the city's health authority.

The average life expectancy of Shanghai residents has kept rising in recent years, as the 2012 figure was 82.41 years, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said on Sunday.

Life expectancy, maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate are regarded as the three major indexes of a regional health development situation. The health level in Shanghai has remained on par with developed countries and areas over the past decade, the commission said.

In 2013, the city's maternal mortality rate fell to 7.08 per 100,000, from 7.1 in 2012. The infant mortality rate rose to 5.73 per 1,000 in 2013 from 5.04 per 1,000 in 2012.
