Brake problem forces Beijing subway test train to derail

(ECNS) Updated: 2014-05-04 17:10

A Beijing subway train failed to halt in time and derailed during a trial run on a new section of track Sunday, the Beijing Times reports.

Only the driver was on the train when the incident happened at 10:30am on a new section of Line 4. Two out of six coaches ran onto a grass field on the east side of the Majialou bridge near the south 4th Ring Road.

The chassis of the two derailed coaches were seriously damaged, but no casualties were reported.

Over 100 workers from the city's security bureau, fire department and Beijing MTR Corporation, the operator of the subway line, were deployed to the site to do repairs.

The site of accident had been cleaned up as of 3:25pm.

An official at the Beijing MTR Corporation said the accident didn't affect the operation of the existing tracks of Line 4, and that a further investigation of the cause is still underway.
