In Zoo Atlanta, giant panda twins Meilun and Meihuan will celebrate their second birthday in July. They were weaned successfully three months ago, and became livelier around visitors.

The giant panda twins, daughters of Lunlun and Yangyang, the first giant panda couple in the zoo, are the first surviving giant panda twins in the US. Since their birth the twins have been the most popular animals in the zoo. Their names are the result of an online vote by locals.

On May 20, the giant panda population census indicates that there are approximately 1,860 giant pandas in the wild. This is a slight increase from the last census, which estimated roughly 1,600 giant pandas in the wild.
