Brazil legend Pele says England "have the same chance" as his country of winning the 2014 World Cup.

But the 73-year-old is hoping the hosts end up facing Uruguay in the final so they can make amends for their 1950 humiliation.

Brazil were big favourites 64 years ago but suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to their South American neighbours at the Maracana.

"I prefer Brazil face Uruguay, then you have the revenge," said Pele.

Asked about England's chances, he responded: "England - like Brazil, Italy, France - have a reputation. We must be prepared for them."

Pele, who won the World Cup three times with Brazil and is widely regarded as the best footballer of all time, added: "We have to respect England because they have the same chance as what we have."

The World Cup begins on Thursday when Brazil face Croatia.

England kick off their campaign on Saturday against Italy, followed by Group D games against Uruguay and Costa Rica.
