Huzhuang village is dubbed one of China's three Catholic shrines. Since 1604, when Catholicism was brought here, the village has nurtured three bishops, 21 priests and over 100 nuns.

Over 200,000 Catholics worldwide make their pilgrimage here every May, the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

This village is so well-known that there is a saying that any international mail will reach the recipient even if the envelope has only two words "Huzhuang, China". There used to be seven churches in the village, which were all destroyed before 1966. The existing two were reconstructed in the 1990s.
