The opening ceremony of 2011 Science and Technology Week was kicked off on May 15 in Dehong, Yunnan province. Famous experts, scholars, scientists and governmental leaders of the province were all there to publicize the knowledge and scientific spirit to the public.
During the event, a series of science lectures, scientific innovative exhibitions and free clinics were also held.
Experts visited several villages, forcing people to better realize the importance of scientific innovation, and pushing scientific concepts into their lives.
''The local government always attributes great importance to the popularization of scientific knowledge,'' Tang Wenxiang, deputy secretary of Dehong, said at the opening ceremony.
''This event will inevitably speed up the formation of a favorable atmosphere to respect science and the talented people in the prefecture,” he added. “It will also give a boost to the popularization and promotion of science and technology, foster people's awareness of innovation, and quicken the economic and social development of Dehong.''
In addition, authorities from Yunnan province and Dehong prefecture have also organized exhibitions about earthquake prevention, energy saving, emissions reduction, safety production, anti-drug and AIDS prevention.
This activity has been successfully conducted 10 sessions in Yunnan province. It has been regarded by some as a good platform for information exchange and cooperation, as well as a window through which Yunnan can display its scientific achievements.
