Counted as one of the three most famous grottoes in China, Longmen Grottoes lie about 12km south of Luoyang city. With 400 years of history, the grottoes span over 1,000 meters in length and were carved on the cliffs of both banks of the Yi River. There are more than 2,000 caves and 10,000 statues of different kinds of Buddhas. The largest statue is 17.14 meters high while the smallest one is only 0.2 meters. It was listed on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list in 2000.
