Ability is much more important. There are many people running around with multiple pieces of paper who aren't worth a hill of beans in the work place. Unfortunately in our society in most professional situations it is much harder getting people to recognize your abilities without the diploma. Long story short get the diploma but don't let the lilly white tower academics convince you that it's the paper that makes the professional. It's all about ability and application.
