When TV series are about the 1950s, 60s, 70s - whenever smoking was socially acceptable, it is still necessary to show smoking. Otherwise it would be unrealistic. In contemporary dramas smoking could probably be more controlled, however to eliminate it completely is unnecessary. Adults should be credited with some degree of intelligence to make up their own minds about smoking. If someone wants to waste their money and damage their health by smoking, it is their choice as long as they don't force their smoke on other people.
