For people who have never been to China I would recommend the following:

(1) the Forbidden City / Palace Museum in Beijing,

(2) the Great Wall in Sanhaiguan, Hebei, by the coast, or Jiayuguan, Gansu, on the Silk Road,

(3) the terracotta soldiers in Xian,

(4) any one of the four grottos: Mogao Grotto in Dunhuang, Gansu, Maijishan Grotto in Tianshui, Gansu, Yungang Grotto in Datong, Shanxi, or Longmen Grotto in Luoyang, Henan, and

(5) Chenghuangmiao bazaar in Shanghai.
