MOSCOW?- Russia's Soyuz 2.1a rocket successfully orbited six US communications satellites "Globalstar-2" Wednesday night, local media reported Thursday.

Citing a spokesman from Russia's Federal Space Agency Roscosmos, the Interfax news agency said the rocket, atop a Fregat booster, lifted off from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 21:09 Moscow time (1709 GMT).

According to Globalstar Inc, all six satellites have reached the targeted low earth orbit of approximately 920 km.

Initially, the launch was scheduled for December 5, but was postponed at the request of the US company. It was the last space launch conducted by Russia in 2011.

Globalstar is a low-earth orbit satellite-based telecommunications system.
