ISTANBUL -- The remains of Japanese journalist Mika Yamamoto who was reportedly killed in Syria was brought to the Turkish province of Kilis on Tuesday.

The semi-official Anatolia news agency reported that Yamamoto, 45, was taken to the morgue of the Kilis State Hospital after entering Turkey via the Oncupinar Border Gate. The corpse of Yamamoto was brought to Turkey with the assistance of the Syrian opposition and Yamamoto's spouse.

Yamamoto was an experienced journalist who had covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the past.

Meanwhile, a group of members of the Japanese press came to Kilis upon hearing of the death of their colleague.

Activists earlier said that a Japanese female journalist was severely injured while covering clashes in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo on Monday, and might have died of her wounds.
