Hou Weidong, former vice-president of the Bank of Communications, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China for serious disciplinary and legal violations, the country's top anti-graft authorities said on Thursday.

Hou was found to have resisted organizational investigations and engaged in superstitious activities, according to a statement released by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision.

The investigation found that Hou accepted improper banquets and travel arrangements, failed to report personal matters as required, and used his position to seek benefits for others in staff recruitment and promotions in exchange for bribes.

Hou was also found to have accepted gifts, money, and prepaid cards, borrowed large sums from those under his supervision, and shifted personal expenses onto others.

The statement said he abused his authority over financial technology resource allocation for personal gain, engaging in power-for-money deals and using his position to help others secure project contracts and financing in return for large sums of money and valuables.

Authorities have decided to expel Hou from the Party, revoke his entitlements, confiscate his illegal gains, and transfer his case to procuratorial organs for further review and prosecution.

Hou, 66, is a native of Shandong province. He joined the CPC in 1986 and spent most of his career in the banking sector. He served as vice-president of the Bank of Communications from late 2010 and as an executive director of the bank from October 2015 before stepping down in April 2020. He came under investigation in October 2025.
