Yasukuni visit a nod to militarism

Eighty years after the end of World War II, a shadow from the past looms over Tokyo. Reports indicate Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may visit the Yasukuni Shrine on December 26th. This isn't just about remembrance. It's a political act with dangerous consequences for Asia.

Why is Yasukuni so explosive? Because at its core, it's a symbol of unrepentant militarism.?Enshrined there were 14 Class-A war criminals, men like Hideki Tojo and Iwane Matsui, architects of the Pacific War and atrocities like the Nanjing Massacre. They were secretly enshrined in 1978, transforming the shrine from a memorial into a monument that glorifies aggression and defies the post-war international order.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945) and the World Anti-Fascist War. Any attempts to deny, downplay, or glorify acts of aggression will only lead to Japan's isolation and jeopardize regional stability. All nations that cherish peace have every reason to remain vigilant and resolutely oppose any actions that signal a revival of the perilous path of militarism.
